The Stearne Medal

In 1979, the College decided to create a medal which it would award, “from time to time to persons of distinction who have made a contribution to medicine in Ireland”.  The medal was initially called The College Medal and presented to Lady Valerie Goulding for her single contribution to establishing rehabilitation services in Ireland.  In 1992 the remit of the medal changed from national recognition to international recognition and the name “The Stearne Medal” was adopted in recognition of John Stearne’s Fraternity of Physicians from which the College evolved.

The Canavan Medal

The Canavan Medal for outstanding performance in the Membership examination in General Medicine is named after past-President Dr Desmond A. Canavan and is awarded at the discretion of the President on the recommendation of examiners.  At the end of each calendar year, candidates who have passed every component of the examination, Part 1 and Part 2 at their first attempt and who have completed their clinical examination in that year, will be considered.  Medal winners will have shown consistently outstanding knowledge and skill in the General Medicine Membership examinations.

The Corrigan Medal
The Corrigan Lecture was introduced in the 1980’s as a competition amongst doctors in training to recognise excellence in communication and raise awareness among all doctors of the importance of communicating with patients and communication with them in a language they understand. 
The winner of the Lecture is awarded the Corrigan Medal, named after past-President (1859-1863) of the College, Sir Dominic Corrigan. This competition is organised by the Collegiate Members Committee. For further information email: members@rcpi.ie

 

The David Mitchell Award

The David Mitchell Award was established at the bequest of Dr. David Mitchell, a former President and Treasurer of the College and is awarded annually.  Applications for the award is open to Collegiate Members only.  The application form must be accompanied by a curriculum vitae, a letter signed by a Fellow of any one of the Royal Colleges indicating that the applicant has played a major part in the work, copies of relevant publications and a summary of one A4 page indicating the content of the proposed lecture. This Award is managed by the Collegiate Members Committee. The Reuben Harvey Memorial Prize

Reuben Joshua Harvey  was the pioneer in practical physiological teaching in Dublin. Following his death in 1881 at the age of 36, his friends donated a sum of money to found the Reuben Harvey Memorial Prize, which was first awarded in 1885 to Henry Theodore Bewley, the first university lecturer in Medical Jurisprudence

Every year the Royal College of Physicians of Ireland presents the Reuben Harvey Memorial Prize to the student who has achieved the highest aggregate marks in the final examination in Medicine, Surgery and Obstetrics from each of the Dublin Medical Colleges/Universities: The Royal College of Surgeons in Ireland; Trinity College, Dublin; and University College, Dublin.

The William Stokes Award

This Award was initiated in 1978 on the Centenary of the death of William Stokes in 1878, President of the College, a founder of cardiology and a leading figure in the Celtic revival. The purpose of the Award is to support research conducted by Collegiate Members or to facilitate their attendance on a specific training course, and it is managed by the Collegiate Members Committee.
