Clinical Updates: Hypertension

The Royal College of Physicians of Ireland is pleased to announce the next meeting in the Clinical Update Series; Hypertension which will take place on Tuesday 2nd March 2010 in RCPI, Kildare Street. Topics to be discussed will include:

This meeting is recognised as a study day for Rehabilitation Medicine, Nephrology, and GUM.

Physicians as Trainers: Being an Effective Educational Supervisor & Mentor (1-day)
2010/2011 Dates TBC
This one-day workshop identifies the responsibilities of an Educational Supervisor and/or mentor and provides practical guidance on how to support trainees during their educational programmes. The programme will start at 9.00 am and will finish at 4.00 pm. This workshop is open to all trainers and SpRs registered with a post-graduate medical training body.

Interview Skills for HST Candidates

This programme is for Basic Specialist Training (BST) trainees planning to enter higher specialist training. This one-day course is based on the selection procedure for entry into the Specialist Registrar training programmes of the Irish Committee on Higher Medical Training (ICHMT), the Faculty of Pathology, the Faculty of Occupational Medicine, the Faculty Public Health Medicine and the Institute of Obstetricians & Gynaecologists.

Physicians as Trainers: Training Day for MFOM Examiners

CME AccreditedThis programme has been developed to train examiners who participate in the Membership of the Faculty of Occupational Medicine (MFOM) exams. The course content covers all components of the membershilp examination - the written, clinical and portfolio. An overall of the assessment process will be given and there will be practical exercises in how to conduction an OSCE assessment.

Immunology for Clinicians - What you neeed to Know

What precisely is the function of the immune system? This one day course will describe the “nuts and bolts” of the immune system and is suitable for all clinicians. A general introduction to the organisation of the immune system will be given and then a series of talks on problems that can develop when the immune response is overactive (auto-immunity, allergy) and underactive(immune deficiency). Information will be given about immunology tests which can be very helpful in deciding if clinical disorders caused by the immune system are present. Finally, the treatment of these clinical conditions will be described using case scenarios.

The Diploma has been developed by the Educational Development Department of RCPI in conjunction with a steering committee whose members are: Dr. Joe Harbison, Consultant Stroke Physician, Dr. Rachael Doyle, Consultant Physician and Geriatrician, Dr. Dominick McCabe, Consultant Neurologist and Dr. Aine Carroll, Consultant in Medical Rehabilitation.

This programme has been designed to improve the skills of doctors with a teaching role. The course is relevant to all grades of doctors involved in teaching but is particularly suitable for Specialist Registrars in Higher Medical Training. The workshops will have a practical focus emphasizing the development and refinement of teaching skills that doctors can take back to the workplace.

Physicians as Trainers: Interviewer Skills Programme for Panel Members (1 Day)

This programme is funded by the HSE and is open to all training bodies
This course will be of benefit to Consultants in any discipline who are members of interview panels. The course will concentrate on developing interview styles including questioning techniques, employment law and the do's and don'ts for successful interviewing. A training DVD has been produced to accompany the course. This course is open to all trainers registered with a postgraduate medical training body.

This programme is part funded by the HSE.

This is a customised management course designed specifically for Specialist Registrars, developed by the RCPI in conjunction with the Irish Management Institute. It is highly participatory and is based around the following themes: becoming a leader in the Health Service, managing self in a pressurised environment, managing relationships in a medical context, and managing the work of medical and other teams. Places are limited and priority will be given to those close to completion of HMT who have not yet completed a management course.

Fees for all programmes are payable to the Educational Development Department, Royal College of Physicians of Ireland, Frederick House, 19 South Frederick St. Dublin 2.
Members & Fellows
RCPI Members receive a 10% discount and RCPI Fellows will receive a 20% discount off all training programmes.
Please note that fees will not be refunded for cancellations received later than 10 working days prior to the programme date.
