Faculty of Occupational Medicine 

About the Faculty

The Faculty has been an integral part of the Royal College of Physicians of Ireland since 1976. The mission of the Faculty is to setting high standards of integrity and professional competence. It is the authoritative body on all matters of educational, professional or public interest concerning Occupational Medicine. The Faculty is also involved in the development and enforcement of standards of practice and safety, as well as ethical codes.

 

The Faculty fulfils a wide range of complex functions including:

*

Acting in an advisory capacity to governmental & statutory bodies in all matters pertaining to occupational medicine, publishing position papers and budget submissions regularly

*

Responsibility for postgraduate medical training and education in occupational medicine in Ireland

*

Responsibility for setting and maintaining standards for the Licentiate of the Faculty of Occupational Medicine and the Membership of the Faculty of Occupational Medicine Examinations

*

Assisting in the maintenance of professional standards for doctors with regard to Continuing Medical Education in the specialty of occupational medicine, including the delivery of dynamic educational events

*

Acts as a vital source of information for individuals practicing in occupational medicine, sets professional standards and represent their members' interest before legislative and regulatory bodies.

Governance of the Faculty

The Faculty governed by a Board, which are elected by the membership. The Board is made up of representatives from the specialty from across the island of Ireland. The remit of the Board of the Faculty is to pursue the mission of the Faculty on behalf of its members.

 

The Board consists of the Dean, Vice-Dean, Academic Registrar, National Specialty Director, Honorary Secretary, Honorary Treasurer and ten Elected Members of the Board, being six Fellows, two Members and two Licentiates.  One Specialist Registrar without voting rights will also be appointed.  For a full list of Board members, please click here. Committees

Examinations Committee

The Examinations Committee is a subcommittee of the Board and consists of Fellows of the Faculty who discuss matters of regarding examinations, namely the Membership of the Faculty of Occupational Medicine and the Licentiate of the Faculty of Occupational Medicine.

 

Credentials Committee

Credentials Committee consists of officers of the Faculty and Past Deans will discuss matters pertaining to election to Fellowship of the Faculty. Additionally this committee supports the NSD and the ICHMT in regard to assessment of applications for entry onto the specialist register.

 

Specialty Training Committee

The Specialty Training Committee is a subcommittee of the Board of Faculty, whose remit is to assist and advise the National Specialty Directors and Dean in some of their duties, in:

- Recruitment and selection of trainees

- Assessment of trainees

- Review of Curricula

- Inspection and approval of training programmes and posts for trainees

- Nomination of the National Specialty Director to ICHMT for consideration.

 

The membership of the STC includes the National Specialty Director, who will take the position of chair, the Dean, or his/her representative, and all trainers. The Dean of Higher Medical Training or his/her nominee will normally attend. 

 

Education Committee

The Education and Training Committee is a subcommittee of the Board and consists of members of the Faculty who discuss matters of regarding education and training on behalf of the Faculty.

 

Special Interest Group

The Special Interest Group is a subcommittee of the Board and consists of members of the Faculty who discuss matters of regarding occupational medicine in a health care setting on behalf of the Faculty.

 

Sponsorship and Finance Committee

The Sponsorship and Finance Committee is a subcommittee of the Board and consists of members of the Faculty who discuss matters of regarding sponsorship and finance on behalf of the Faculty.

 

Communications Committee

The Communications Committee is a subcommittee of the Board and consists of members of the Faculty who discuss matters of regarding communication on behalf of the Faculty. It prepares a quarterly newsletter for members and trainees.
