About the Faculty
The Faculty of Public Health Medicine was established by the Royal College of Physicians of Ireland in 1976 and functions within and as an integral part of the College. The standing orders of the Faculty have stated objects which are listed below.

To advance the science, art and practice of Public Health Medicine in Ireland. To promote education, study and research in Public Health Medicine for the public benefit. |

To act as an authoritative body for consultation on matters of educational or public interest concerning Public Health Medicine. |

(c)

To represent the specialty of Public Health Medicine on international, national and regional councils or committees concerned with postgraduate medical education. |

(d)
|
To obtain and maintain recognition for itself as the body responsible for advising on all matters concerning Public Health Medicine under any scheme for specialist training in Ireland provided always that any benefit obtained by Members or Fellows of the Faculty as the result of such recognition should be merely incidental to the achievement of the charitable objects of the Faculty. |
The Faculty acts in an advisory capacity to key stakeholders such as Government and statutory bodies in all matters pertaining to public health medicine, sitting on committees, contributing to consultation papers and publishing budget submissions regularly

It is responsible for setting and maintaining standards for the Part I and Part II Membership of the Faculty of Public Health Medicine examinations
The Faculty has developed core competencies in the specialty which its Members and Fellows are required to maintain through Continuing Medical Education and are working with the relevant bodies to fulfil the requirements of Professional Competence as laid out in the new Medical Practitioners Act 2007

Through regular communication with the Members and Fellows, the Faculty is a vital source of information for doctors practicing Public Health Medicine

Board
According to the Standing Orders, the Board of the Faculty shall consist of fifteen persons eligible for election to the Board, one of whom shall be the National Specialty Director (Training), the others being nominated or elected pursuant to Standing Order XII. At least two-thirds of the Board shall be Fellows. There shall ordinarily be on the Board at least one member from each province of Ireland. The persons so nominated or elected shall elect and appoint the Officers of the Board, who shall be Fellows, from among their own members, namely a Dean and a Vice-Dean of the Faculty and an Honorary Secretary and an Honorary Treasurer.
