Dr Twomey was selected as the winner from three finalists who presented their case studies to an adjudication panel on Friday October 23, 2009 during the RCPI St Luke’s Day celebrations. Finalists were shortlisted from case studies submitted by trainees, on the Basic Specialist Programme (BST), via the Online Medical Education Centre.
Maria Twomey graduated from University College Cork medical school in June 2006. Having completed a 12 month internship in Cork University Hospital Dr Twomey travelled to Australia and worked in cardiology and respiratory medicine in the Prince Charles Hospital in Brisbane. On returning to Ireland Dr Twomey commenced medical SHO training on the Cork scheme, and is completing her second year, currently as an SHO in Haematology.
