Dr Clare O’Leary FRCPI becomes first Irish women to reach South Pole

Dr. Clare O’Leary, a Fellow of the College has became the first Irish women to reach the South Pole. Travelling with the ‘Beyond Endurance’ Team Dr. O’Leary reached the pole at 4.10 on the 8th of January 2008.  

Dr O’Leary is one of the world’s leading female adventurers and high altitude climbers with many seasons on the world’s great ranges. She was the first Irish female to climb Mt Everest and also the first Irish female (15th female worldwide) to complete the Seven summits which includes Mt Vinson in the Antarctic and Mt McKinley in Alaska. As part of the Irish Beyond Endurance Expedition to Greenland, she became the 1st Irish woman to cross Greenland.
Dr Clare O’Leary is a specialist in gastroenterology and general internal medicine. She is currently based in South Tipperary General Hospital, Clonmel, where she works as a consultant. She was admitted as a Fellow of the College on the 6th of October 2006.
