To commemorate the delivery of the first communication to the Dublin Pathological Society on the 10th November 1838, by George Greene, Fellow of the College and King’s Professor at the School of Physic, the Faculty has established an annual award in the form of a medal and prize.
The medal will be awarded to the pathologist-in-training, in any discipline of pathology, who submits what is considered by the selectors to be the best written communication relating to any of the pathology disciplines.
This may include a paper or article published in a biomedical journal or periodical in the current or previous year. It may also include an unpublished communication, such as an audit, article or paper, submitted in a form suitable for publication. Theses submitted for higher degrees will not be accepted but communications developed from the research work of the thesis may be submitted. The Faculty will not publish any submission but will encourage the submission of suitable material for publication elsewhere.
To be eligible for consideration, the pathologist must be first author and must have held an appointment in any discipline of pathology in a hospital or university in Ireland.
The Board will appoint a panel of selectors, representative of the relevant pathology disciplines, and independent of the authors, to judge the entries. The panel may apply a relative weighting to work done in Ireland and to work published in a peer-reviewed journal.
Applications for 2010 should be submitted byFriday 28th January 2011 and must include 2 copies of the communication with a covering letter to indicate:
- That the applicant is the principal author
- That the applicant is currently in training in a pathology discipline, or has completed training within the past year
- The qualifying appointment held in an Irish hospital or university laboratory
- The laboratory where the major part of the work was done
Applications should be submitted to:
