Changes to RCPI Training Programmes
16/06/2009
Effective from 1 July 2009, the General Professional Training (GPT) programme will become the Basic Specialist Training (BST) programme, and the Higher Medical Training programme for SpRs will become the Higher Specialist Training (HST) programme.

This name change affects GPT in General Internal Medicine, Paediatrics, Obstetrics & Gynaecology and Histopathology and all of the Higher Medical Training programmes accredited by RCPI.

The decision to re-name the training programmes was made to promote the uniformity of postgraduate medical training across all major medical specialties. The name change will not affect the structure or composition of the training programmes.

The name change will apply to the following aspects of the current GPT and HMT programmes:

Certificates of Completion – Trainees who complete the BST programme on or after 30 June 2009 will be issued with a Certificate of Completion of Basic Specialist Training. Certificates of Completion of GPT approved by the GPT Committee before June 2009 are still valid evidence of satisfactory completion of the training programme.

The certificate issued on completion of HST remains known as a CSCST (Certificate of Satisfactory Completion of Specialist Training).

Governance – The administrative body for the BST programme will be continue to be the GPT Committee of The Royal College of Physicians of Ireland until further notice.

The administrative body for the HST programme will remain known as the Irish Committee on Higher Medical Training (ICHMT).

Administrative Queries – Queries regarding the BST programme should be made to the BST Department in RCPI. The administrator to contact is Ms Aoife Ní Mhaitiú (phone 01 8639 711). The email address has changed to BST@rcpi.ie.
