Successful Public Meeting on ‘Bullying and Harassment in the Work Place’
15/11/2007
The Royal College of Physicians of Ireland (RCPI) recently held the third event in their public meeting series ‘Promoting a Healthy Nation’ with over 200 people attending the College’s newly revamped and impressive building on Kildare Street.

The Faculty of Occupational Health Medicine who organised the meeting on bullying and harassment in the context of employment and mental health, where overwhelmed with requests by members of the public wishing to attend.

Ms. Gillian Bowler, current chairman of Irish Life and Permanent chaired the meeting, which heard many harrowing and personal stories of victims, which were in marked contrast to the best practice policies espoused by the meetings key speakers. There was a general conclusion that more needs to be done to improve both reporting and mediation structures. The meeting also heard from Health and Safety Authority, CEO Martin O’Halloran about their Code of Practice for Employers and Employees on the Prevention and Resolution of Bullying at Work.

Dr Ken Addley, Dean of the Royal College of Physicians’, Faculty of Occupational Medicine concluded the meeting by stating that faculty would consider the various issues raised at the meeting and use them to inform the development of a new position paper on mental health and employment which was being developed.
