RCPI President Awarded Honorary Fellowships
08/07/2008
The President of the Royal College of Physicians of Ireland has returned from his 2008 overseas tour of sister Colleges having been conferred with Honorary Fellowship of the Royal Australasian College of Physicians and the American College of Physicians.

The trip included visits to Adelaide and Washington DC and formed part of the RCPI Presidents mission to strengthen links with sister bodies. The tour gave Dr John Donohoe the opportunity to observe how similar institutions have addressed changes in medical education and training, in particular the regulatory and quality challenges facing the profession.

During his tour Dr Donohoe participated in the Washington International Forum meeting which involved Presidents from Dublin, London, Glasgow, and Edinburgh, Australasia, Malaysia, Hong Kong, the Philippines and many other representatives from European countries.

Dr. Donohoe said he was “very pleased to accept these Honorary Fellowships on my own behalf but more particularly on behalf of the College. Having participated in these international meetings, it is clear that many of our sister Colleges are facing similar challenges. I hope the strong links which were developed will assist us in our own current Reforming for Excellence programme.”

Dr John Donohoe was elected as the 134th President of the Royal College of Physicians of Ireland in July 2007. He recently retired as a Consultant Nephrologist and Transplant Physician at the National Renal and Transplant Centre, Beaumont Hospital and the Mater Misericordiae University Hospital, Dublin.
