The programme showcased current research and how Public Health Physicians are putting research into practice to improve our national health profile. There were two Keynote Speakers:
Dr Francesco Branca, Regional Director, Nutrition, World Health Organisation, spoke about The Global Public Health Crises of Nutrition.
The Chief Medical Officer of the Department of Health and Children, Dr Tony Holohan, spoke about the vital role of Public Health Medicine in safeguarding the health of the Irish public.
Other presentations addressed the vital role of Public Health Medicine in safeguarding the health of the Irish public, from obvious threats such as infectious diseases but also the more subtle but potentially devastating effects of our changing lifestyles. Topics included how health information supports the work of health services; the characteristics and behaviours of mothers which can affect the health of their children; radon gas exposure; and reasons why young Irish women don’t get tested for Chlamydia.
