According to Standing Order XVI (a) The Board shall set up the following Standing Committees:

(i) Finance and General Purposes Committee, which shall consist of five members of the Board.

(ii) Education and Examination Committee, shall be constituted as determined by the Board.  Two-thirds of the Committee shall be Fellows.

(iii) Fellowship Committee, which shall be constituted by the Board and shall consist of an equal number of Board and non-Board Fellows.

 

...and such further committees or sub-committees as the Board from time to time may deem necessary, and the Board may from time to time adopt rules for each such Standing Order or other committee or sub-committee.

 

The Dean and Vice-Dean are ex officio members of every Committee.

Finance and General Purposes Committee

 

To advise the Board on matters relating to finance.

To prepare accounts for the Annual General Meeting.

To recommend rates of subscriptions.

To act as a liaison between the Faculty and the College in relation to financial matters.

To act as a liaison between the Faculty and other bodies eg. other Scientific Societies as appropriate.

 

Education and Examination Committee

 

To oversee the training process under the direction of the National Specialty Director.

To liaise, primarily through the National Specialty Director, with the Dean of Higher Medical Training

To agree the training programme.

To develop the curriculum and training documentation.

To allocate Specialist Registrars.

To approve training locations.

To accredit and re-accredit trainers.

To process protocols received for those doctors undertaking Part II MFPHMI.  This includes assessment of protocols and allocation of supervisors.

The examinations are administered by the College Examinations Office rather than by the Faculty.  However, the Faculty provides the examiners and controls the standard of the examinations.  The roles of the examiners are to set questions for and to correct the Part I examination, to examine Part II theses and to administer the general oral to Part II candidates. This is done through the convenor of examinations, supported by the co-ordinator of the Part I examination and the co-ordinator of the general oral examination.

 

Fellowship Committee

The Fellowship Committee consists of officers of the Faculty and Past Deans.

They make decisions on matters pertaining to election to Fellowship of the Faculty, and applications for Membership Ad Eundum of the Faculty

 

Meetings Committee

 

To organise bi-annual Scientific Meetings.

To decide scientific content of meetings.

To prepare programme for each meeting, including speakers and chairpersons of sessions.

To communicate with invited speakers and chairpersons of sessions in advance of meetings.

To greet invited speakers at meetings.

To evaluate scientific meetings.

To provide feedback to the Board on meetings.

To advise the Board on the format of future scientific meetings.

To liaise with the Honorary Treasurer in relation to financial aspects of meetings.

 

International Health Committee

To progress Faculty engagement in international health in order to expand and enhance its mission.

To engage in international health in the areas of

    1. policy and advocacy; 
    2. education and training
    3. supporting specialist contribution.

To further strengthen and explore additional training opportunities in international health for specialist registrars in training.

To promote and facilitate SPHMs to explore and avail of opportunities in global public health by regularly including this theme in CME and scientific meetings, and by facilitating links with the HSE, Irish Aid and other relevant organisations.

To establish a link with HSE to promote clarification of standards and processes for SpRs and Specialists undertaking training or service opportunities in international health.

To build on established links with the UK Faculty in order to develop Irish thinking in international health training and advocacy.

 

Advocacy group

The Advocacy group consists of interested members of the Faculty who prepare communications on behalf of the Faculty and of College. They work closely with the Communications Manager of the College in this regard.    The committee has appointed spokespersons on a range of topics and will be working to raise the profile of the Faculty and to bring to the public’s attention a range of public health topics.

 

CAS Committee

To ensure that arrangements for Continuing Medical Education within the Faculty are compatible with the overall CME framework within the College. The terms of reference of this Committee are:

To develop a plan for competence assurance for Fellows and Members of the Faculty of Public Health Medicine

To introduce the plan on a pilot basis,

On completion of the pilot to make recommendations regarding a definite plan for competence assurance to the Board of the Faculty.

 

Newsletter Committee

This committee, which currently has 8 members, publishes 3 newsletters per year. The chair/editorship rotates among the members for each edition of the newsletter.

 

Research Ethics Committee

The Research Ethics Committee was set up in 2001 and meets quarterly to:

· consider research protocols submitted for Part II MFPHMI which have been submitted in adherence to Faculty guidelines.

· consider other research proposals emanating from Faculty Members, Faculty fellows, public health training locations and other public health bodies within Ireland.

Membership currently includes three non public health doctors and one representative of the nursing profession, as well as two lay members, one of whom is a legal representative.

Specialty Training Committee

The Specialty Training Committee’s remit is to assist in the recruitment and selection of trainees, the training and assessment of trainees, ongoing review of Curriculum of training. The membership of the STC includes the National Specialty Director, who will take the position of chair, the Dean, or his/her representative, and all trainers. The Dean of Higher Medical Training or his/her nominee will normally attend.   To become a Trainer of the Faculty, a doctor must provide evidence of

· Membership of the Faculty of Public Health Medicine

· Current Curriculum Vitae

· Current CME returns

· Attendance at a training the trainer course in the last 5 years
