Fellowship of the Royal College of Physicians of Ireland
Fellowship is awarded by the College upon nomination by existing Fellows (or upon nomination by existing Fellows of sister Colleges) to doctors of consultant or equivalent status. The benefits of this award include recognition of professional standing, access to Continuing Medical Education and Continuing Professional Development support, international collegiality and the opportunity to influence the future of the profession. Fellowship awards the right to use the post nominal FRCPI and to play a full part in the governance and future direction of the College.

Paths to Fellowship
There are three paths to Fellowship of the Royal College of Physicians of Ireland. The deadline for all nominations to Fellowship is June 30th annually. If nominations are not received prior to this date the Credentials process will not begin until the following calendar year. The paths are as follows:
Nomination of Members of the College (MRCPI) to Fellowship:
Nominees who hold the MRCPI qualification, provided their career has progressed satisfactorily and they remain professionally in good standing, have a normal expectation of election to Fellowship.
Criteria for Nomination of Members of the College (MRCPI) to Fellowship:
1. Nominee must hold Membership of the Royal College of Physicians of Ireland (MRCPI) for not less than 4 years.
2. Nominee must be in a full-time consultant post or equivalent post in the jurisdiction that the nominee is practising. Evidence that the post held is equivalent to consultant level should be submitted with the completed nomination form and curriculum vitae.
3. Nominee must be nominated by one Fellow of the Royal College of Physicians of Ireland (FRCPI) or two Fellows of a Sister College.
4. All nominations must be made on the Nomination to Fellowship Form (included in A Guide to Fellowship) prior to June 30th
Nomination of Non-Members of the College to Fellowship (through by-law 5C):
Nominees who do not hold Membership of the Royal College of Physicians of Ireland (MRCPI) can be nominated to Fellowship through what is known as the 5C route provided they are in a consultant or equivalent post and are the first or second author on at least 15 publications in peer review journals.
Criteria for Nomination of Non Members of the College to Fellowship:
1. Nominees through this route must be in a full-time consultant post or equivalent post in the jurisdiction that the nominee is practising. Evidence that the post held is equivalent to consultant level should be submitted with the completed nomination form and curriculum vitae. The nominee should also be the first or second author on at least 15 publications in peer review journals.
2. Nominee must be nominated by one Fellow of the Royal College of Physicians of Ireland (FRCPI) or two Fellows of a Sister College.
3. All nominations must be made on the Nomination to Fellowship Form (included in A Guide to Fellowship) prior to June 30th.
Nomination to Honorary Fellowship:
Admission to Honorary Fellowship is the highest honour the College can bestow. This honour is reserved for world leaders in medical science and exceptional contributors to the welfare of our communities both nationally and internationally. These nominees are distinguished in their field and value an association with the College. Honorary Fellows are not necessarily medically qualified.

Criteria for Nomination of Honorary Fellow:
1. Nominees through this route should value an association with the College.
2. The nominee should be as distinguished as those to whom the College admits to Fellowship.
3. The nominee should not be persons on whom Fellowship could normally be conferred by another route, e.g., By-Law 5 (c).
4. Nominee must be nominated by two Fellows of the Royal College of Physicians of Ireland (FRCPI).
5. All nominations must be made on the Honorary Fellowship Nomination Form (included in A Guide to Fellowship) prior to June 30th

Membership of the Royal College of Physicians of Ireland
Membership is governed by the by-laws of the Royal College of Physicians of Ireland. Every candidate wishing to obtain Membership of the Royal College of Physicians of Ireland must pass both parts of the Membership Examination (unless exemption has been granted) and attend a Membership Conferring Ceremony where he/she is conferred as a Member of the Royal College of Physicians of Ireland. Membership awards the right to use the post nominal MRCPI.
