Healthcare-associated infections - microbiological facts and public perceptions
Wednesday February 15th 2007
Organised in collaboration with:
The Faculty of Pathology
Healthcare-associated infection affects about 1 in 20 patients admitted to hospital. These infections result in considerable illness, and sometimes mortality. They also represent a significant financial burden on the healthcare system, on patients and on society in general.
The overall aims of this meeting were to inform members of the public about key issues related to healthcare-associated infection, to outline the role that microbiologists (as members of the Faculty of Pathology, RCPI) play in the diagnosis, control and prevention of healthcare-associated infection, to outline the difficulties faced by the Media in covering this subject, and to provide an opportunity for members of the public to communicate to the Faculty of Pathology and the RCPI their concerns in this area.
