Alcohol: Is our love affair with alcohol causing more pleasure or pain?

Alcohol related problems are among the top 3 health problems globally according to the World Health Organisation. In Ireland there are particular problems over and above most countries. The overall aims of the meeting were to discuss our relationship with alcohol, to generate public discussion on Ireland’s alcohol problems and suggest solutions. Dr Jim Kiely, Chief Medical Officer, discussed the work of the Strategic Task Force on Alcohol and gave an update on what progress had been made on the recommendations and objectives laid out in the Task Force report. Ms Marion Rackard of Alcohol Action Ireland gave information on the social harm to those surrounding the problem drinker, the importance of an independent voice on alcohol and talked about the EU Charter on alcohol. Dr Declan Bedford talked about the burden of injury, disease and death from alcohol in society and the barriers to implementing policy to prevent this.
