RCPI 2023 Elections: President Designate and 4 Ordinary Councillors

The Royal College of Physicians of Ireland (RCPI) is pleased to announce the appointment of Dr Diarmuid O’Shea as President Designate. Dr O’Shea, a Consultant Physician in Geriatric Medicine, will take up the role of President Designate in June 2023, and the role of RCPI President on 18 October 2023, succeeding Professor Mary Horgan. Dr O’Shea, the sole nominee for the role, was deemed elected after the close of the nomination period.

The elections will also see four Fellows elected to RCPI Council (3 seats for Medicine and 1 seat for Occupational Medicine).

Six Fellows have put themselves forward for election for the 3 Ordinary Councillor (Medicine) positions:

  • Professor Gaye Cunnane  
  • Professor Cathy McHugh  
  • Professor Derek O’Keeffe  
  • Professor Donal Reddan  
  • Dr Mohammad Saleem  
  • Dr Yvonne Smyth  


Two Fellows have put themselves forward for election for the 1 Ordinary Councillor (Occupational Medicine) position:

  • Dr Martin Hogan  
  • Professor Mohammed Ranavaya  

How to vote

The election of Ordinary Councillors is determined by a vote of College Fellows under the College By-Laws. Voting opened on Wednesday, 17 May 2023 

RCPI has engaged Civica Election Services (CES) to administer the online election. All Fellows of the College in good standing will receive an email from takepart@cesvotes.com with a unique link to the online ballot sheet.

Voting closes on Wednesday, 5 July 2023 at 12pm GMT.
