Opportunities to lead the establishment of a new structure for General Medicine within RCPI

As part of our ongoing Governance Improvement programme, we are establishing the Institute of Medicine to oversee training and professional activities in Internal Medicine and its specialties.

We are now seeking applications from Fellows of RCPI for two significant clinician leadership roles in the Institute of Medicine.

Those successfully appointed will lead the establishment of a new structure for General Medicine within RCPI to improve the delivery of training and education in General Medicine specialties.

Foundation Dean, Institute of Medicine

The Foundation Dean will be responsible for overseeing all matters of the Institute of Medicine in its dual role as a training and professional body. The Dean will work with the support of the Institute Board and Committees.

In their first year in this role, the Foundation Dean will work on the design and development of the Institute of Medicine with the aim of establishing the Institute by October 2019.

The role of Foundation Dean requires a five-year commitment. The role will commence in October 2018 and it is expected that the time commitment will be 2.5 days per week:

  • One year as Foundation Dean (October 2018 – 2019)
  • Three years as Dean on the launch of the Institute of Medicine (October 2019 – 2022), and
  • One year as Immediate Past Dean (October 2022 – 2023) – to provide guidance to the new Dean and remain as a member of the Board for this year.

A key objective for the Foundation Dean will be to manage the successful implementation of the Institute of Medicine and provide leadership and guidance on the strategy for the Institute, including development of an engagement strategy with Trainees, Members and Fellows

Director of Training and Education, Institute of Medicine

Reporting to the Dean, the Director of Training and Education will be responsible for the oversight and development of postgraduate education for Basic and Higher Specialist Training programmes across 16 specialties in general medicine.

The Director will take over the existing role of Chair of the ICHMT and will work closely with the Foundation Dean on the design and development of the training structure within the Institute of Medicine.

This is a three-year post. The expected time commitment for this role is one day per week.

The Director of Training and Education will lead the development and implementation of a strategy for postgraduate training and education within the Institute of Medicine, including the establishment of a clinical framework for the Institute of Medicine in its role as a training body

About the Institute of Medicine

As part of our ongoing Governance Implementation programme, we are establishing a new Institute of Medicine to act as the training and professional body for General Medical specialties in Ireland.

The aim is for the Institute to be in place by October 2019.

The objectives of the Institute of Medicine will include:

  • Acting as an authoritative body for consultation on matters of educational or public interest concerning any of the specialties within the Institute
  • Representing the specialties on international, national and regional councils or committees concerned with postgraduate medical education
  • Obtaining and maintaining recognition for the Irish Committee for Medical Training (ICMT) as the body responsible for advising on all matters concerning any of its specialties under any scheme for specialist training in Ireland
  • Acting in an advisory capacity to key stakeholders such as government and statutory bodies
  • Setting and maintaining standards for the MRCPI in General Medicine examinations
