We are delighted to welcome 541 doctors onto RCPI training programmes today, Monday 10 July 2017.
Training doctors to become world-class specialists is at the heart of what we do in the Royal College of Physicians of Ireland. This year we welcome 325 doctors into Basic Specialist Training, 164 into Higher Specialist Training, 12 doctors onto our International Clinical Fellowship Programme, 1 doctor on our International Residency and 39 doctors on the joint HSE and College of Physicians and Surgeons Pakistan postgraduate scholarship programme.
Professor Frank Murray, President of RCPI, has the following message for Trainees:
“The start of a new medical year is an important occasion for the health service and training bodies such as RCPI, as the next generation of clinical leaders graduates from internship to BST, and from BST to the final stages of training. We are delighted to welcome all those embarking on specialist training with RCPI and we look forward to meeting you at your induction days in No.6 Kildare Street.
“Monday 10 July 2017 also represents the first day post-clinical training for many doctors who officially completed HST today and I would like to congratulate you on reaching this significant milestone."
I would like to wish all of our Trainees the very best in their new posts. You represent the future of medicine and it is a privilege to be working with you and supporting you on the path to becoming a specialist. I hope your new posts allow you to learn, develop as clinicians and make new friends and connections that will last a lifetime.

Professor Frank Murray added, “I know that life as an NCHD can be challenging, and that doctors in training are often under a lot of pressure. I urge you to take good care of your health and wellbeing and to make the most of the supports available to you. Also remember that we work together, and that we should support and encourage each other.
"Physician wellbeing is a priority for RCPI and we are here to support you. We have practical advice on physician wellbeing available on our website, which provides useful guidance on taking care of yourself.”
We know that being a doctor can be hard work, both physically and emotionally. As a provider of care, sometimes you need to be reminded of the importance of caring for yourself.
Through our Physician Wellbeing programme we are providing support, training and information to doctors at all stages of their careers.
We are pursuing innovative approaches to support the health of doctors and raising awareness of the importance of safeguarding doctors’ health and wellbeing.
We have a dedicated Medical Training team here in RCPI to support doctors on our training programmes. If you have any questions about your training, get in touch.
