Statement from the Institute of Obstetricians and Gynaecologists

Statement issued 7 December 2018

The Institute of Obstetricians and Gynaecologists is the national professional and training body for Obstetricians and Gynaecologists in Ireland.

In its role as a professional body, the Institute is developing draft guidelines in anticipation of the introduction of legislation to  allow for termination of pregnancy, and this is near completion.

It must be emphasized that the Institute has no role, authority or responsibility in the actual delivery of obstetric and gynaecological services which is the remit of the HSE. However, members of the Institute are entitled to express an opinion as to the implementation of new services, and in particular the safety and readiness of such new services, and it is entirely appropriate for members to convene a meeting of the Institute to discuss these matters formally.

An EGM can be convened 28 days after a motion is formally received.
