23rd Annual Smiley Lecture
The Faculty of Occupational Medicine is pleased to announce that Professor Beasley will deliver the 23rd Annual James Smiley Lecture at 2.15pm on Friday 19th November 2010 in the Royal College of Physicians of Ireland, No. 6 Kildare Street, Dublin.
Richard Beasley MBChB, FRACP, DM(Southampton), FAAAAI, FRCP(London), DSc(Otago)
is a physician at Wellington Hospital and Director of the Medical Research Institute of New Zealand. He is an Adjunct Professor at the Universities of Otago, Canterbury and Victoria University of Wellington, New Zealand, and Visiting Professor, University of Southampton, United Kingdom. His research interests in respiratory medicine and venous thromboembolism include epidemiology, clinical management and pharmacovigilance. Recently he has undertaken research which has identified that prolonged seated immobility at work is associated with an increased risk of venous thromboembolism.
The Faculty of Occupational Medicine is the recognised training body for doctors practising in the specialty of occupational medicine in Ireland. It is a constituent body within the Royal College of Physicians of Ireland. Its aim is to promote the highest standard of health and wellbeing for those of working age; to advocate that occupational illness and disease be eliminated from workplaces; and, to speak as the authoritative voice for all issues relating to occupational medicine within the country.
Dr James Smiley was a founder Fellow of the Faculty of Occupational Medicine in 1976. He was a renowned occupational physician practising in Belfast. On his death, the Smiley family endowed an annual lecture named after him. Each year the Faculty of Occupational Medicine invite an eminent scholar to deliver the lecture. This year's lecture is the 23rd in the series
