Faculty of Public Health Medicine welcomes new members and fellows

The Faculty of Public Health Medicine celebrated the achievements and successes of its community at a special ceremony held at No. 6 Kildare Street on 19 May as part of its annual Summer Scientific Meeting.

The ceremony saw the admission of one honorary fellow, 22 fellows, eight faculty members and two diplomate members, all of whom join RCPI’s global network of doctors. In addition, 12 recipients of Certificates of Satisfactory Completion of Training (CSCST) were conferred during the ceremony.

The event took place during the faculty’s 50th anniversary year, marking five decades of contribution to population health and wellbeing.

Professor John Middleton, former President of the UK Faculty of Public Health and current President of the Global Network for Academic Public Health (GNAPH), was awarded an honorary fellowship, the highest accolade the Royal College of Physicians of Ireland can confer.

Delivering the citation at the ceremony, Professor Mary Codd, UCD, said: “Professor Middleton’s contribution to public health in the UK, Europe and worldwide is exemplary. Throughout his distinguished career, he has demonstrated the key values of a public health leader: credibility, consistency, integrity and courage in the delivery of sometimes uncomfortable messages.”

The citation also recognised Professor Middleton’s leadership during the COVID-19 pandemic through his work with ASPHER, the Association of Schools of Public Health in the European Region where he established a COVID Task Force to support collaboration and knowledge sharing across member schools.

The Valentine Barry Perpetual Trophy, awarded in recognition of exceptional performance in the faculty examinations, was presented to Dr Ciara Carroll. Completion of the ASPIRE Fellowship in January 2026 was also marked for Dr Ellen Cosgrave.
