The programme, which has been running for many years, allows individuals to support RCPI’s conservation programme.
Dun’s Library, founded in 1713, is the most important historic-medical library in Ireland. It contains about 30,000 volumes relating to the history of medicine in Ireland, many of which are rare and even unique. The long term preservation and conservation of so many historic books is an ongoing challenge. Through the programme we are encouraging friends and supporters of the history of medicine to invest in the future of the library and its collections, allowing future generations to make use of this valuable resource.
Dun’s Library Adopt a Book Programme works by allowing individuals to select one of the items in the library in need of conservation work and to sponsor its restoration. The contribution of the donor is recorded in a personalised book plate which is added to the volume. Once the conservation work is completed the donor is invited to come and visit the library and see the results of the restoration work. Books can also be adopted as a gift, a perfect present for a medic or book lover!
To find out more about the programme please visit the Adopt a Book page of our website, where you can see a selection of the books needing adoption and view some of the results of the programme. If you have any questions please contact the librarian, Robert Mills, who will be happy to help.
