Cardiovascular disease (CVD) remains the leading cause of death in women with nearly seven times more deaths than breast cancer. Every two hours a woman dies in Ireland from cardiovascular disease (heart, stroke and blood vessel diseases) but unfortunately, as in other countries most women remain unaware of their risk. Many women believe heart disease to be an exclusively male disease however just as many women die from it as men, with approximately 5,000 women dying from heart disease and stroke in Ireland each year.

Factors such as smoking, being overweight, obese or physically inactive, having high blood pressure, high cholesterol, diabetes and a family history of cardiac problems, increase the risk of heart attack and stroke, and in many cases women are even more vulnerable to these factors than men.

After menopause a woman’s risk of heart disease increases and risk factors such as being overweight and having high levels of cholesterol become more pronounced. However, cardiovascular disease does not appear overnight, and by getting a blood pressure and cholesterol check regularly, as well as avoiding smoking and keeping to a healthy weight, women can help keep risk factors in check in the longer term.

This public meeting will look at the signs and symptoms of heart disease, heart disease and the menopause, weight management and food choices for a healthy heart. It will also include a personal account from a woman who has experienced heart disease.
