Faculty of Public Health Medicine celebrates achievements of its community at special ceremony

The Faculty of Public Health Medicine celebrated the achievements and successes of its community at a special ceremony held at No. 6 Kildare Street on 20 May as part of its annual Summer Scientific Meeting.

The ceremony saw the admission of one honorary fellow, three fellows, eleven associate members, one member ad eundem and three diplomates, all of whom join RCPI’s global network of 14,000 doctors. Additionally, four recipients of Certificates of Satisfactory Completion of Training (CSCST) were conferred during the ceremony. Medals for outstanding contributions and trainer excellence were also awarded.

Professor Paul Kelly, Former Australian Government Chief Medical Officer, was awarded an honorary fellowship, the highest accolade the Royal College of Physicians of Ireland can confer.

Speaking at the ceremony, Prof. Kelly said: “It is a huge honour to receive honorary fellowship of the Royal College of Physicians of Ireland. I have Irish heritage and have had some wonderful professional relationships here in Ireland so to have that link formalised in this way is really special for me, and a huge honour.”

Professor Mary Horgan, Interim Chief Medical Officer, delivered a citation for Prof. Kelly at the ceremony noting his remarkable career and achievements in public health: “Professor Kelly is a distinguished public health physician and epidemiologist whose career has been marked by exemplary public service and an unwavering commitment to population health. He played a central role in shaping Australia’s public health policy guiding the country through the COVID-19 pandemic with integrity, clarity, humility and scientific rigour.”

“He demonstrates the attributes of a great leader – inclusiveness, listening power, teamwork, decisiveness and humility.  This is further boosted by his interest in research and scientific curiosity.” Prof Horgan continued.

Professor Patrick Wall received an Outstanding Service to Public Health Award which recognises individuals who have demonstrated exceptional contributions to the field of Public Health.

Dr Mary Ward was awarded the Dr Emer Feely Trainer Excellence Award which recognises outstanding contributions by trainers involved in the Higher Specialist Training (HST) in Public Health Medicine.
