Healthcare should never be a casualty of war; it is the foundation of survival, dignity, and hope.

The following letter was sent to Taoiseach Michaeál Martin on behalf of the Royal College of Physicians of Ireland and its members.

Dear Taoiseach,

Subject: Healthcare should never be a casualty of war; it is the foundation of survival, dignity, and hope.

On behalf of the Royal College of Physicians of Ireland and its members, I write to express our unwavering support for the Irish Government’s international efforts to bring peace to nations afflicted by war and devastation, including in Gaza and Ukraine. The commitment of Ireland to diplomatic resolution and humanitarian aid is an embodiment of the principles we hold dear—compassion, integrity, and the preservation of human life.

The members of our College, deeply dedicated to the advancement of healthcare and the protection of human wellbeing, are appalled by the destruction of healthcare systems in conflict-ridden regions. The loss of medical infrastructure, the targeted attacks on healthcare workers, and the suffering endured by innocent men, women, and children weigh heavily upon us. Healthcare should never be a casualty of war; it is the foundation of survival, dignity, and hope.

We commend the Government’s unwavering stance in advocating for peace, ensuring the protection of humanitarian corridors, and supporting global initiatives that restore medical services in war-torn communities. Ireland’s voice on the international stage as a nation devoted to peace and human rights is vital, and we stand with you in your continued efforts to safeguard the fundamental rights of those caught in conflict.

Members of the Royal College of Physicians of Ireland are providing expertise and support in humanitarian medical relief wherever possible.

Thank you for your leadership in championing peace and human dignity. We look forward to the continued progress of Ireland’s humanitarian work to bring peace, to alleviate suffering and pain, and the hope it brings to those in dire need.

Yours sincerely,

Dr Diarmuid O’Shea, President, Royal College of Physicians of Ireland
