RCPI invites Expressions of Interest for the role of Dun’s Librarian

The Royal College of Physicians of Ireland (RCPI) invites expressions of interest for the role of Dun’s Librarian, a senior honorary appointment which oversees the stewardship and strategic direction of RCPI’s historic collections, in consultation with the Keeper of Collections.

The Dun’s Librarian is responsible for all matters relating to the RCPI Heritage Centre which cares for the College’s nationally significant historic collections, including Dun’s Library, the archive, and the medical instrument and materia medica collections. Since July 2018, the Heritage Centre has held Full Museum Accreditation under the Heritage Council’s Museum Standards Programme for Ireland.

The appointment comprises a three-month term as Dun’s Librarian Elect, followed by a three-year term as Dun’s Librarian (renewable once), and a subsequent one-year term as Immediate Past Dun’s Librarian.

The post-holder will work closely with the Keeper of Collections and will serve as Chair of the Library and Heritage Committee which reports to the Executive of the College. The role requires an average commitment of 0.2 days per week with additional time for special events.

Applicants must be Fellows of the College in good standing, have been members of the Library and Heritage Committee within the past five years, and have a demonstrable interest in the history of medicine.

The closing date for applications is 5pm on Friday, 27 February 2026. Interviews will take place in March 2026.
