A new AI Governance Framework, setting out a clear approach for the responsible use of artificial intelligence across clinical practice, medical training and education, and the Royal College of Physicians of Ireland’s organisational activities.
Launched during St Luke’s Symposium by AI Lead, Professor Cathy Quinlan, the framework recognises that AI is already being used by physicians and establishes principles and commitments to support its safe, effective, and ethical adoption, while maintaining professional accountability, patient safety, and public trust.
As Ireland’s largest postgraduate medical training body and a professional body for physicians in Ireland and internationally, the Royal College of Physicians of Ireland has a responsibility to provide leadership as the use of AI continues to evolve. The framework sets out how the college will support learners, trainees, members, fellows, and staff to engage with AI responsibly across three key areas:
- AI in clinical practice
- AI in training and education
- AI in organisational use
The framework is aligned with emerging national and European developments, including the EU AI Act and Ireland’s AI for Care strategy. It also establishes a formal governance structure through the college’s AI Governance Committee.
Through the framework, RCPI is setting out a consistent approach to AI across its operations and educational programmes, while supporting physicians to navigate its growing role in clinical practice responsibly.
