Twenty-four doctors were admitted as fellows of RCPI, at a special ceremony held in No. 6 Kildare Street on 21 October.
This college’s most prestigious category of membership, Fellowship of RCPI (FRCPI) is a special recognition of an individual’s contribution to their specialty, as part of a community of physicians operating at the forefront of medicine.
The college also welcomed two esteemed clinical leaders as honorary fellows of RCPI in recognition of their outstanding contributions to medicine: Dr Robert A. Harrington (cardiologist and dean, Weill Cornell Medicine New York) and Dr Paula Rochon (Centre for Mature Women’s Health, Mount Sinai Toronto).

Dr. Robert A. Harrington earned his Doctor of Medicine (M.D.) at Tufts University School of Medicine, after which he became chief resident in internal medicine at University of Massachusetts Medical Centre at Worcester. He later became director of Duke University School of Medicine, where he worked for 22 years. In 2012, he became Standford University Arthur l. Bloomfield Professor of Medicine. Currently, he’s based at Weill Cornell Medicine, where he’s been dean since 2023. A cardiologist, he has an interest in evaluating antithrombotic therapies to treat acute ischemic heart disease, and trying to better understand and improve upon the methodology of clinical research – including the use of technologies to facilitate the conduct of clinical trials. In addition, he has served as a chair and member of the US Food and Drug Administration Cardiovascular and Renal Drugs Advisory Committee, and is a past American Heart Association (AHA) president.

Dr Paula Rochon completed her medical degree at McMaster University Ontario. After a residency and fellowship at University of Toronto and St. George’s Hospital London, she undertook a Masters degree in Public Health at Harvard – during which she chose to specialise in geriatric medicine (she indebts this to her grandparents both living to 104-years-old). She took a position at Baycrest Health Sciences hospital for the elderly in Toronto, where she focused on drug-prescribing, and the effects of pharmacological management of chronic disease in the elderly. She worked at Women’s College Hospital Toronto, where she advocated for sex-specific research. Over the last five years, Dr Rochon has oversaw the establishment of Mount Sinai Toronto’s Centre for Mature Women’s Health, which provides integrated clinical care, education, and research dedicated to perimenopausal, menopausal, and aging women.
