RCPI’s patient safety education collaborative, S.A.F.E, featured in Global State of Patient Safety 2023
A patient safety education programme offered by the Royal College of Physicians of Ireland (RCPI) has received international recognition following its publication in the 2023 edition of the Global State of Patient Safety.
Situation Awareness For Everyone (S.A.F.E), a 6-month collaborative patient safety education programme, has been featured as a case study in the annual patient safety report published by the Institute of Global Health Innovation at Imperial College London.
In the report, Dr Peter Lachman, who leads RCPI’s expert Quality Improvement faculty, said: “The concept behind the programme is that patient safety should be about managing risk, not simply about responding to incidents. S.A.F.E involves teaching clinical teams in a practical, jargon-free way, supporting them to understand what they do well, what needs to improve, and how they can measure the impact of changes they make.”
The report which places Ireland 7th in the OECD Patient Safety Country Ranking showcases S.A.F.E and its excellence in safety measurement and improvement from the patient, family and carer perspective.
Now in its 6th cohort at RCPI, S.A.F.E provides multidisciplinary clinical teams with the skills and knowledge to implement an innovative safety improvement bundle. Applications for S.A.F.E. are open with clinical teams invited to join in March 2024.
