Royal College of Physicians of Ireland welcomes the report and recommendations of the National Taskforce on the Non-Consultant Hospital Doctor Workforce

Ireland’s largest postgraduate medical training college is committed to working with stakeholders to implement this report’s recommendations.

The Royal College of Physicians of Ireland welcomes the report and recommendations of the National Taskforce on the Non-Consultant Hospital Doctor Workforce. President, Dr Diarmuid O’Shea, said the report provides an implementation plan that we can work in collaboration with all who have a role to play in ensuring that we continually improve the quality of care we provide, meet the needs of the growing population, while at the same time bring clarity and focus to the needs of doctors training in our health care system.

“I wish to thank the Minister for Health Stephen Donnelly, Prof Anthony O’Regan and the members of this group who have, through broad consultation, captured the critical working environment, support and resources required now to meet the health needs of our population.

“Non-Consultant Hospital Doctors (NCHD) are delivering care throughout Ireland to patients in increasing numbers and it is essential that these recommendations are fully implemented to address many issues they face while working in our hospitals,” Dr O’Shea said.

“The Royal College of Physicians of Ireland, which is Ireland’s largest postgraduate medical training college, is fully committed to working with all involved, including the HSE, to implement the recommendations. I have convened a meeting next month to begin to progress this dialogue, frame the vision of physician training in the years ahead and to create an implementation plan.”

Currently there are almost 1,800 doctors training in core and specialist hospital-based medical training schemes with the Institute of Medicine, Institute of Obstetricians and Gynaecologists, Faculty of Paediatrics, Faculty of Pathology, Faculty of Public Health Medicine,  Faculty of Occupational Health Medicine.
