The Royal College of Physicians of Ireland’s Annual Conference gets under way today, bringing together 1,500 medical professionals and clinical leaders over the next three days to explore the evolving landscape of healthcare. Taking place at No. 6 Kildare Street and live streamed, the conference features a full programme of keynote lectures, panel discussions, and events addressing clinical innovation, leadership, healthcare equity, and the future of medical education.

The conference opens with the RCPI Annual Public Meeting which focuses on advancing inclusive healthcare with a keynote address from Professor Katriona O’Sullivan, author of the bestselling memoir Poor. A short panel discussion will follow where Katriona will be joined by Consultant Psychiatrist, Professor Brendan Kelly, Paediatrician, Dr Aoibhinn Walsh and Mr Paul Merrigan from the Inclusion Health Team at St James Hospital, Dublin – the first of its kind in Ireland. The event will be chaired by Dr Diarmuid O’Shea, President of the Royal College of Physicians of Ireland.

Tomorrow, at the conference’s Heritage Day, there will be a focus on cholera – a disease, while now rare in Ireland, remains endemic in many regions of the world. An expert panel of speakers will trace cholera’s journey from the first Irish outbreak in 1832, through its representation in literature, to today’s efforts to eradicate the disease in Zambia.  This will be followed by a powerful reading of Miasma, a play by Colin Murphy, inspired by Dr John Snow’s pioneering epidemiological research on the 1850s outbreak in London. The day will conclude with a Fellowship admission and awards ceremony.

On Thursday, St Luke’s Symposium brings together clinicians, educators, and advocates including Mrs Mary Robinson, Jennifer Carroll MacNeill, Dr Robert Califf and Prof Mary Horgan, to explore the future of healthcare through the lens of innovation, leadership, and progress.

A particular highlight this year will be a pre-recorded conversation with Former President of Ireland and member of the Elders, Mary Robinson, followed by a live panel discussion covering leadership, climate and health.

On Monday, 20 October, the Annual Stated Meeting of RCPI Council Members will be held.

With many sessions already fully booked, we encourage those interested to register soon and take advantage of the remaining in-person places or join virtually to be part of this important conversation shaping the future of healthcare.
