Updates from RCPI Simulation Governance Steering Committee

The Royal College of Physicians of Ireland Simulation Governance Steering Committee attended a Train the Trainer Day on Thursday 25 May 2023. The event took place in the Clinical Simulation & Interprofessional Simulation Centre (ICAPSS) in Galway University Hospital and was led by Simulation Clinical Lead, Prof Dara Byrne.

The training day was designed to introduce attendees to simulation in the training environment and to encourage representatives from all RCPI Training Bodies to consider how simulation could form part of the curriculum for their specialty training programmes.

Over the course of the day, attendees had opportunities to learn and discuss various aspects of simulation. Prof Dara Byrne gave a presentation on the uses of modern simulation activities, followed by Dr Paul O’Connor who spoke on Human Factors in Simulation. The group also spent time looking at scenario templates and task analysis templates for designing team-based and procedural-based simulations and discussed barriers and enablers to implementing simulation.

Finally, the group observed a multidisciplinary simulated case study to get a feel for the real-world application of simulation in training.

Overall the day was a resounding success and an enjoyable learning experience for all who attended. Further Train the Trainer Days are to be planned as the Simulation Governance project progresses.
