Become a Trainer

Doctors reviewing notes.

Why become a Trainer?

Trainers play a crucial role in the delivery of our Basic and Higher Specialist Training programmes. They guide Trainees along the path to becoming a specialist and help the next generation of medical leaders reach their full potential.

As an RCPI Trainer, you have access to motivated, highly-skilled Trainees who have been successfully appointed following a competitive process. These are Trainees who will contribute to a high quality service.

We will provide you with advice, training and support through our Physicians as Trainers educational programme.

Smiling Doctor.

Can I become an RCPI Trainer?

We welcome applications to become an RCPI Trainer. First, check that you meet the following criteria:

  • Registered on the relevant Specialist Division of the Medical Council Register
  • Registered on a Professional Competence Scheme
  • Practising at consultant level (permanent post) in Ireland
  • Fellow of the relevant training body (RCPI or one of our Faculties/Institutes) - This is desirable but not mandatory

Once your online application is approved you will be required to complete the RCPI Physicians as Trainers Essential Skills course. You will not be an approved RCPI Trainer until you have completed this course.

The Role and Responsibilities of the Trainer document is available below for you to review.

The Tenure of Office for RCPI trainers is five years. You will be asked to provide updated contact details every five years.
