Entry Guidance and Advice

Applications for our 2027 Basic Specialist Training (BST) programmes will open on 7 September 2026. Please check back for updates.

About the BST admissions process

Basic Specialist Training (BST) programmes are highly competitive national recruitment processes, with demand for training places significantly exceeding the number available each year. For the July 2026 intake, RCPI received 1,574 applications for approximately 378 BST training posts. The number of BST places for 2027 is expected to be in line with 2026.

To ensure a fair, transparent and objective selection process, applicants are assessed using a consistent admissions framework that recognises academic achievement, progression from medical school and internship, readiness for specialist training, experience within the Irish healthcare system, and scholarly activity. The framework is applied consistently to all eligible applicants in selecting candidates for interview.

RCPI regularly reviews its admissions framework to support high educational standards and the future workforce needs of the Irish health service. The College also engages with the HSE, Department of Health and other stakeholders to advocate for increased training places each year.

Before you apply

Before starting your application, please review the eligibility requirements and admissions process to ensure you understand what is required.

Essential Eligibility Requirements

To be eligible for Basic Specialist Training, applicants must:

  • Hold a primary medical qualification recognised by the Irish Medical Council.
  • Have completed, or be due to complete, a recognised internship before commencement of the training programme.
  • Be eligible for registration within the Trainee Specialist Division of the Irish Medical Council.
  • Meet HSE English language requirements.
  • Be eligible to work in Ireland at the time of application.

The allocation of places on Basic Specialist Training programmes is subject to national policy issued by the Department of Health.
Following shortlisting and interview, available training places will be allocated in the first instance to applicants who, at the time of application, are:
Citizens of Ireland; Nationals of another Member State of the European Union (including EEA and Swiss nationals); UK nationals; or holders of a Stamp 4 immigration permission (including eligible Stamp 4 categories).
Appointments within this group will be made in order of merit and subject to the applicant meeting the eligibility requirements and standards prescribed by RCPI.
Should training places remain unfilled following allocation to the above categories, remaining places may be allocated to other eligible applicants in order of merit.
Applicants are responsible for providing appropriate documentation to confirm their citizenship or immigration status as part of the application process.

Competitive Entry

Meeting the eligibility requirements does not guarantee a place on a programme.  Basic Specialist Training programmes operate  a competitive admissions process comprising of:

  1. Eligibility verification
  2. Application review and scoring
  3. Shortlisting (where  required)
  4. Interview
  5. Ranking and offers

The Admissions Process

Applying for a training programme is an important step in your career. We have outlined the admissions process below to help you understand what is required at each stage and ensure you have everything you need before submitting your application.

Phase 1: Submitting your Application

Applications are submitted online through the RCPI website. Applicants should ensure that all required documentation is complete, legible and submitted by the application deadline. The documentation you may be required to provide includes the following:

Phase 2: Eligibility Verification

All applications are reviewed to ensure applicants meet the published eligibility requirements.

Applicants must submit all required supporting documentation at the time of application.

Applications that do not meet the minimum eligibility requirements, or that are incomplete at the application deadline, cannot progress further in the process.

Phase 3: Shortlisting

Eligible applicants are assessed using published criteria intended to recognise:

  • Academic success
  • Structured postgraduate clinical training
  • Experience in the Irish Health system
  • Research and scholarly activity

These criteria are applied consistently across all applicants to determine eligibility for interview.

Please note: BST General Internal Medicine, Paediatrics, and Obstetrics and Gynaecology follow the same shortlisting framework. BST Histopathology has separate eligibility, shortlisting and interview criteria. Details of the criteria for each programme are provided below.

Criteria for General Internal Medicine, Paediatrics and Obstetrics & Gynaecology

The following framework is used to assess applications for BST General Internal Medicine, Paediatrics, and Obstetrics and Gynaecology before the interview stage. Applicants are assessed against the criteria below with a maximum of 35 marks available.

The criteria are grouped into five categories. The marks awarded for each category depend on the applicant's qualifications, experience and supporting evidence.

 Category Maximum marks
Medical Qualification 10

Total available marks 35

Please refer to the detailed breakdown of marks below for information on how applications are scored against each criterion.

Breakdown of marks

Shortlisting for interview for General Internal Medicine, Paediatrics, and Obstetrics & Gynaecology

Applicants achieving a minimum score of 20 will be considered eligible for shortlisting.

Interview capacity is set at 2.5 interviews per 1 available training post in each specialty.

Where the number of eligible applicants exceeds interview capacity, candidates will be ranked by shortlisting score and invited to interview in rank order.

Where multiple applicants achieve the same score at the final shortlisting position, all applicants with that score will be invited to interview.

Shortlisting examples

The examples below are intended solely to demonstrate how the shortlisting framework operates. Actual interview invitations will depend on verification of submitted evidence and the composition of the candidate pool in relation to available interview capacity. Applicants should not assume that any example reflects a guaranteed interview outcome.

Phase 4: Interview Assessment

Applicants invited to interview are assessed using a structured process. The interview is designed to assess clinical reasoning, communication, professionalism, judgement and overall readiness for Basic Specialist Training.

Interview performance remains the primary determinant of appointment, with 65% of available marks allocated at interview compared with 35% available through application scoring. The purpose of shortlisting is to identify candidates who meet the criteria to progress to interview; the purpose of the interview is to differentiate candidates and determine appointment ranking.

All interview categories are assessed using predefined scoring criteria and candidates are evaluated against the same standards.

Category Maximum marks Criteria
