In year three of the RCPI Taught Programme, which supports trainees across Basic Specialist Training and Higher Specialist Training, a holistic cross-functional review was undertaken. The review confirmed the strength of the blended learning model and the value of tutor-led delivery, while identifying opportunities to improve consistency in learning outcomes, online content design, thematic progression, analytics, and the integration between online modules and tutorials. The findings provide a strong evidence base for the next phase of enhancement across specialist training.
This review was conducted alongside the ongoing quality assurance and continuous improvement of the taught programme. Key activities included a targeted review of learning materials for Pathology specialties within Higher Specialist Training (HST), informed by feedback from trainees, trainers, and clinical tutors. In addition, significant work was undertaken to develop and prepare for the launch of Year 3 of the HST taught programme, scheduled for July 2026, as well as the delivery of targeted research clinics and events designed to enhance trainee engagement and capability in research.
A particular focus was placed on the onboarding and professional development of clinical tutors through shared practice sessions.
Programme content was reviewed and updated in line with the established review cycle, including modules in safe prescribing, clinical audit, antibiotic use, paediatric allergy, and core pathology. Progress also continued on the Institute of Obstetricians and Gynaecologists (IoG) Pocket Tutorial project, which is nearing completion, with several new pocket tutorials scheduled for launch during the 2026-2027 academic year.
Significant work has been completed on the International Hub to enhance the resources and support available to international Trainees.
