Dedicated to the Education and Training of Doctors

The Royal College of Physicians of Ireland is a postgraduate medical training collegededicated to ensuring that doctors have the skills to provide patients with the best possible care. Founded in 1654, the college supports doctors to enhance their skills, competencies and professionalism throughout their working lives.

The Royal College of Physicians of Ireland, through its Faculties and Institutes, offers medical training programmes, examinations, diplomas and educational courses to equip doctors with the skills and knowledge they need to care for patients and run safe and efficient healthcare systems.

It also offers a range of educational diplomas and courses for learners in the wider healthcare sector.

Our mission is to develop and support our Learners, Trainees, Members and Fellows to be leaders in healthcare delivery and transformation through training, education and advocacy.

Our vision is to create a globally connected community of doctors improving people’s health.

Our President

Dr Diarmuid O'Shea, Consultant Physician in Geriatric Medicine, is the 143rd person to hold the position of President of the Royal College of Physicians of Ireland. As President, Dr O'Shea chairs our Executive and Council, and is actively involved in many other areas of our College.

Our Global Network

We have 13,000 Trainees, Licentiates, Members and Fellows across 29 different specialties in over 90 countries. This network provides the knowledge, expertise and commitment to enable us to achieve our strategy and drive constant improvements in patient care.

Our Members identify themselves with the post-nominal letters MRCPI. Our Fellows use the post-nominal FRCPI.

 

Our Members and Fellows

RCPI is a professional membership body. Doctors at all stages of their career are part of our community from Trainees beginning their specialist training to Fellows who are highly experienced specialists and leaders of health services around the world. Achieving Membership and Fellowship of RCPI is a significant milestone in a medical career - one that is recognised around the world. Our Members and Fellows lead initiatives and discussions that inform and influence government policy on public health.

During the 2021 / 2022 Financial Year, the Royal College of Physicians received funding for various educatonal activities from the following sponsors:

  • Novo Nordisk: €16,456 sponsorship for study day endocrinology
  • A Menarini Pharmaceuticals Ireland Ltd: €2,425 sponsorship study day dermatology
  • Abbvie: €50,000 Bresnihan Molloy Fellowship in Rheumatology
