Annual Report 2025-2026

Leadership in Patient Care

The National Specialty Quality Improvement Programmes evaluate national performance trends and variation across four diagnostic specialties, with particular emphasis on specialty specific key quality indicators such as,  turnaround times, patient experience and comfort, and opportunities for improvement. They include the National Histopathology QI (NHQI) Programme, the National GI Endoscopy QI (NEQI) Programme, the National Radiology QI (NRQI) Programme and the National Bronchoscopy QI (NBQI) Programme.

Advancing Patient Care through Clinical Audit and Quality Improvement

During 2025-2026, the National Specialty Quality Improvement (NSQI) Programmes continued to advance patient care and safety across Ireland through clinical audit, quality improvement, research, and national collaboration. More than 200 healthcare professionals attended the annual NSQI conference, while new patient-friendly reports improved public access to programme findings.

Across radiology, histopathology and GI endoscopy, the programmes reported increased clinical activity, enhanced data quality, progress against key quality indicators, and stronger regional oversight. Research supported by the programmes was published and presented internationally, and development of the National Bronchoscopy Quality Improvement Programme continued to progress.

Second Patient Friendly Reports Launched

The second patient and public-friendly reports was launched this year, providing accessible versions of the three national annual data reports. Health literacy is fundamental to patient-centred care, and these reports reflect the programmes' commitment to presenting information in a clear, accessible, and meaningful way. By making complex information easier to understand, they empower patients and members of the public to navigate the health system with confidence, make informed decisions, and engage actively in their care. We extend our sincere thanks to Ms Ashling O’Leary from Patients for Patient Safety Ireland, whose commitment and collaboration with the programme management team made these reports possible.
