Candidates who take this examination need to have a primary medical degree, be currently practising and have at least three years of direct patient care experience in HIV management.
They are expected to demonstrate a high level of proficiency in a range of evidence-based practices within the field of HIV clinical care. This includes but may not be limited to
- managing co-morbidities and co-infections
- recognising and responding to drug mechanisms and interactions
- applying knowledge of pathogenesis and virology
- utilising relevant diagnostics
- implementing effective treatment strategies.
Candidates who take this exam are expected to excel in clinical decision-making and be capable of collaborating with interdisciplinary teams to ensure comprehensive and effective patient management, staying informed of ongoing research and treatment advancements.
Candidates should demonstrate a patient-centric approach to managing HIV-associated conditions, uphold high ethical standards, and demonstrate cultural competence in providing care to specific populations. They should be equipped to apply their knowledge and skills in developing and delivering clinical interventions and treatment plans that optimise patient outcomes, adhering to EACS Core Curriculum and Guidelines.

Upload a recent colour passport photo (minimum resolution 100*100 pixels) and a scanned, attested copy of your primary medical degree. Attestation must appear on the front of the copy. Your degree can be attested by:
- An Garda Siochana (if you are an Ireland-based candidate)
- The issuing university or medical school
- A solicitor/ notary public/ lawyer
- A Commissioner for Oaths
- An Irish or British Consulate
- Your embassy or High Commissioner
Candidates who are registered with the Medical Council (Ireland or UK) may provide proof of Medical Council registration instead of uploading their primary medical degree.
If your primary medical degree is in another language than English, it needs to be officially translated into English. Official translations of any documents will only be accepted if they have been prepared and/or authenticated by:
- The issuing university or medical school
- An Irish or British Consulate
- Your embassy or High Commissioner

All of our written examinations are delivered by remote invigilation. Instead of travelling to an examination centre and sitting the computer-based examination with other candidates, you do the examination online in a quiet, secure place of your choosing at your own computer, e.g. at home or at work. You will also need a stable internet connection. Candidates are supervised remotely by invigilators throughout the examination.
A quiet, secure environment means:
- A room to which you have exclusive access (single occupancy - not shared)
- A room that does not have integrated security cameras, or any recording equipment, other than the webcam on your PC or laptop
- You are confident you will not be disturbed during the examination, e.g. by traffic, construction work, or people

EACS has a limited number of scholarships available for EACS members, who fulfil the pre-determined criteria.
EACS offers a limited number of scholarships to support selected candidates taking the exam for the European Diploma in HIV Medicine. These scholarships cover 50% of the examination fee (equivalent to €375).
Applications for scholarship open at European Diploma in HIV - Scholarship Application on 05 May 2025 and close on 26 May 2025.
Please note: EACS is unable to award scholarships to individuals or institutions based in countries currently under European Union sanctions. The full list of sanctioned countries can be found on the EACS website. All scholarship applications will be verified accordingly.
