A visit from the European Society of Clinical Microbiology & Infectious Diseases

For its 23rd edition, the summer school held by the European Society of Clinical Microbiology & Infectious Diseases (ESCMID) chose Dublin as its host city, from 29 June-9 July.

This is the first time Dublin has hosted the summer school. The society has a membership of 13,000 delegates, and holds an annual conference which recently attracted 16,000 visitors.

The summer school’s programme – consisting of lectures, workshops and practical sessions on developing presentation skills – also includes site visits to hospitals and laboratories in the host city. Among the busy itinerary was a visit to the Royal College of Physicians of Ireland (RCPI).

RCPI President Dr Diarmuid O’Shea spoke words of welcome in an address to the delegates. A presentation about the importance of work-life balance was given by RCPI Health and Wellbeing Manager Maria Golden. RCPI Keeper of Collections Harriet Wheelock dived into the history of the college, and took the delegates on a tour of the historic building at No. 6 Kildare Street.

RCPI Dean of Education Dr Maeve Doyle, also Director of the ESCMID Summer school, said: “Over the last 14 months, we have worked closely with the education team in the ESCMID office to bring the summer school to Dublin for the first time.”

“When the delegates returned home, their feedback on their experience in Dublin was extremely positive. I believe through participation in this international education event, Ireland has contributed to training the future world leaders in infection management,” said Dr Doyle.
