Launch of New CPD Accreditation Framework – 1 July 2026

The Medical Council has introduced a new Continuing Professional Development (CPD) Accreditation Framework designed to strengthen the quality, consistency and governance of CPD for doctors in Ireland. The new framework formalises the accreditation process for CPD activities and establishes clear standards for how educational activities are assessed and recognised.

On 1 July 2026, RCPI launched the new Framework, replacing the previous CPD Approval System. RCPI has been formally recognised as an Accredited Provider, authorising us to develop, deliver and accredit CPD activities in accordance with the Medical Council's standards and criteria. In addition, RCPI is authorised to accredit eligible CPD activities organised by third-party individuals and organisations.

Under the new framework, all RCPI educational activities must be formally accredited for CPD credits. These changes will support greater transparency, consistency and quality assurance across all accredited CPD programmes.

To support implementation, RCPI has developed a new online CPD accreditation application system aligned with the requirements of the framework. The streamlined, user-friendly process is designed to make applications more efficient and straightforward for activity organisers.

Further information on the new framework and what it means for activity organisers is available here.
