In Memoriam, Prof Denis Gill

All at the Royal College of Physicians of Ireland are saddened to hear of the passing of Prof Denis Gill, a founder and former dean of RCPI Faculty of Paediatrics.

Beginning his paediatric training in the late 1960s, Prof Gill’s training took him to Guy’s Hospital London and working alongside the father of paediatric nephrology, Dr Cyril Chantler. Prof Gill returned to Dublin and worked as paediatric nephrologist in Children’s Health Ireland at Temple Street.

Alongside like-minded peers, Prof Gill co-founded the Faculty of Paediatrics at the Royal College of Physicians of Ireland. He served as dean of the faculty from 1992-1994, a period which saw the faculty intently intervene in the area of childhood immunisation and prevention of childhood poisoning.  He sat as chair of RCPI National Immunisation Advisory Committee (NIAC) and led the development and publication of national guidelines on immunisation.

Paying tribute, RCPI Faculty of Paediatrics dean Dr Judith Meehan said:

Denis’s exceptional leadership, dedication to children's health, and unwavering commitment to paediatric education has left an enduring legacy. He inspired generations of clinicians and trainees, and his contributions will continue to shape the profession for years to come. He will be remembered with great respect and gratitude.

RCPI President Dr Diarmuid O’Shea said:

Prof Denis Gill was a pioneering paediatrician, an outstanding educator and a founding force behind our Faculty of Paediatrics. His contribution to children's health, training, medical education and the life and work of our college has left a lasting mark on generations of doctors and patients alike. Denis's legacy will endure through the faculty he helped establish and the countless lives he touched throughout his distinguished career. On behalf of all at RCPI, I extend our deepest sympathies to his family, friends and colleagues.
