New Dean appointed to the Faculty of Public Health Medicine
Professor Emer Shelley will take up the position of Dean at the Faculty's Annual General Meeting on 6 December 2017 for a three-year term. Emer Shelley MD MSc FFPHMI FFPH FRCPI is a retired Specialist in Public Health Medicine with the HSE who was based in the Department of Public Health in the East and an Honorary Clinical Associate Professor of Epidemiology at the RCSI.
With a background in cardiovascular epidemiology and prevention, Professor Shelley has had a long association with the Irish Heart Foundation, including as Project Leader for the Kilkenny Health Project and subsequently as Medical Director of the Foundation. After drafting Building Healthier Hearts on behalf of the Cardiovascular Health Strategy Group, from 2000 to 2006 she was based in the Department of Health as National Heart Health Advisor to support implementation of the Strategy.
On her return to the HSE, in addition to contributing to the health protection function of the Department of Public Health in the East, she advised on planning health services for patients with stroke, a role she continued after the establishment of the National Clinical Programme for Stroke.
She maintained involvement with the National Clinical Programme for Stroke as Chair of the Steering Group of the National Acute Stroke Register.
Prior to retiring, Professor Shelley was Public Health Lead for the Clinical and Integrated Programmes for Older People. Her links with the academic and voluntary sectors facilitated collaboration in research in cardiovascular epidemiology as well as on trends in demography and health service activity.
