RCPI Launches new Health and Meditation Programme: Healing From the Centre

The Royal College of Physicians of Ireland (RCPI), under the direction of Dr Barry White, Consultant Haematologist and Fellow of the RCPI, has developed a programme for clinicians who wish to study and learn the practice of meditation.

Health and Meditation: Healing From the Centre hosted by Laurence Freeman, Meditation; one of the world’s leading teachers on the practice of meditation, has been developed for those who wish to study, explore and learn how to practice meditation and how it relates to healthcare. Health and Meditation: Healing From the Centre will commence with the introductory workshop on 17 October, during St Luke's Symposium week. The course will include a further 11 days of teaching on the following dates; 14, 15 November 2013; 25 February 2014; 4, 25, 26 March 2014; 4, 25 April 2014; 1, 23 May 2014; 9 June 2014.

Laurence Freeman is a Benedictine monk, and Director of The World Community for Christian Meditation of which Meditatio is the outreach programme, bringing the fruits of meditation into secular professions such as medicine, education, business and work with the poor and marginal. On the benefits of the event to clinicians Laurence Freeman said; “Given the current pressures and stresses in the lives of clinicians, new sources of renewal of the healing arts are needed. Meditation is such a source, beginning at a personal, interior level that can be integrated into daily life as a simple, modest yet life-changing discipline. Research on the physical and psychological benefits of meditation is now widely reported. So, those wishing to learn, not only about meditation but how to meditate will benefit most from this programme.”

Dr Barry White said, “Meditation is an ancient practice with a very real potential to enhance the health and wellbeing of the physician as well as the patient. Our programme is designed for clinicians who would like an introduction as well as those who wish to explore and understand this in more depth/detail.”

The one-day workshop on 17 October will include a practical introduction to meditation with suggestions of how to integrate it as a life changing addition to personal and professional life. By the end of the training participants will have improved self-awareness and knowledge, a greater resilience and ability to handle stress and confidence in sharing meditation practice.

Healthcare Professionals who are interested are invited to attend the one day workshop or the full programme, which will be recognised with CPD credits. Special discounts apply for RCPI Trainees, Members and Fellows for both the RCPI Meditation Workshop and the RCPI Health and Meditation: Healing From the Centre programme.
