Awards and Recognition

 

Overview

The Faculty of Pathology celebrates excellence and significant contributions in the field through several prestigious awards, including:

  • George Greene Medal Award
  • John D. Kennedy Medal
  • Paule Cotter Medal
  • John O'Dowd Medal

These awards recognise outstanding achievements by pathologists, highlighting their research, career contributions, and impact on the specialty.

 

George Greene Medal Award

George Greene, a Fellow of the College and King’s Professor at the School of Physic, delivered the first communication to the Dublin Pathological Society on 10 November 1838. To commemorate this key event in the history of Irish Pathology, the faculty has established an annual medal to recognise outstanding research by a trainee.

 

John D. Kennedy Medal

Professor John D. Kennedy was Professor of Pathology at University College Galway and Chair of the Irish Standing Committee of the Royal College of Pathologists. He was a central figure in the establishment of the Faculty of Pathology on 10 October 1981. The John D. Kennedy Medal honours exceptional contributions to the field of pathology by pathologists within seven years of completing their training across all sub-specialties.

 

Paule Cotter Medal

Dr Paule Cotter was a Consultant Haematologist in Cork and served as Dean of the Faculty of Pathology from 1990 to 1993. The Paule Cotter Medal was established in her memory to recognise academic citizenship in pathology. This includes qualities such as collegiality, mentorship and training, service development and delivery, as well as contributions to national leadership.

 

John O’Dowd Medal

Dr John O'Dowd was a dedicated Fellow of the Faculty, known for his deep commitment to quality in pathology, until his untimely passing in 2023. In recognition of his contributions, the Faculty of Pathology established the John O'Dowd Medal in 2024. Awarded annually, this medal honours the best Quality Improvement project submitted to the Faculty's Annual Symposium.
