National Survey of Chronic Disease Management by Irish Hospital based Consultants

Catherine Darker, Colm Bergin, Gillian Walsh, Brendan O’Shea

This report is unique in reflecting a partnership between the Adelaide Health Policy Initiative, which is based within the Trinity College Department of Public Health and Primary Care, and the Royal College of Physicians of Ireland. Over 100,000,000 EU citizens currently suffer from chronic disease, making it the most important disease burden in Europe. Based on current projections, the burden of chronic conditions is expected to increase dramatically in Ireland over the next number of years. By 2020 it is anticipated that the number of adults in Ireland with chronic conditions will increase by around 40% and that relatively more of the burden of these conditions will be borne by older adults.
