12 mentors now available to support RCPI Trainees

We are delighted to welcome Dr Yvonne O'Brien as a new mentor to the RCPI mentoring initiative. This means that twelve mentors, all of whom are experienced doctors, are now available to help RCPI Trainees who would like extra support.

Dr Yvonne O’Brien is a medical graduate of National University of Ireland, Galway. She completed specialist training in Obstetrics and Gynaecology in December 2019. During the course of her training, she completed a clinical fellowship in Reproductive Medicine in Merrion Fertility Clinic. She was awarded the degree of Doctor of Medicine for research that was conducted during the fellowship. She works as a Consultant Obstetrician Gynaecologist in Galway University Hospital and Portiuncula Univesrsity Hospital. Her clinical interests include pregnancy loss, ambulatory gynaecology, reproductive medicine and early pregnancy and gynaecological ultrasound. Yvonne is invested deeply into clinical teaching and mentoring, and she lives in Galway with her husband and young family.

About the RCPI Mentoring Initiative

The mentoring initiative is a confidential mentoring service which operates on a self-referral basis, at no cost to Trainees. These doctors have received specialised training on how to mentor and can help Trainees who are dealing with issues such as:

  • Career choices, not sure if they've chosen the right specialty
  • Balancing family life with work
  • Considering leaving medicine and pursuing a different career
  • Challenges with interpersonal relationships at work
  • Bereavement or traumatic events
  • Challenges with contracts
  • Managing time effectively

Trainees who contact RCPI to request support will be matched to the mentor who is best equipped to offer support for that particular Trainee. Our mentors will share their knowledge and experience and will help Trainees achieve the best results. Our mentors are committed to supporting Trainees’ development.

Would you like to be matched with a mentor?

If you are currently on an RCPI training programme (including our international programmes), and you feel you would benefit from mentoring, please contact our Health and Wellbeing department to arrange an initial consultation before matching you with the most suitable mentor. Our Health & Wellbeing department can be contacted at wellbeing@rcpi.ie.

There is no charge for this service and it is strictly confidential. It is important to note this is not a counselling service; doctors who require treatment for mental health can find resources listed here and you can find information on agencies that provide suppport for acute stress here.
