RCPI launch new online Gateway to Communication course

Gateway to Communication will introduce doctors in the Irish healthcare service to the core concepts of communication with patients and with each other.

The Royal College of Physicians of Ireland (RCPI) has just launched a new online course to help promote better communication skills for doctors. The Gateway to Communication course has been developed in association with the College of Anaesthesiologists of Ireland, the Royal College of Surgeons in Ireland, the Irish College of General Practitioners, the HSE Open Disclosure Programme, and the HSE National Healthcare Communication Programme.

This innovative new course will be delivered online and allows doctors in the Irish healthcare service to complete it at a time that suits them. Gateway to Communication will introduce doctors to the core concepts of communication with patients and with each other. The aim is to create awareness of effective communication in the healthcare setting and it will signpost existing training workshops available across the training bodies and the HSE.

Prof Mary Horgan, President of RCPI, was on hand to launch this new initiative alongside Dr Terry McWade, RCPI CEO and Dr Colm Henry, CCO, HSE.

Speaking about this new course, Prof Mary Horgan said:

“I’m delighted to launch the new Gateway to Communication course. We know that due to the ongoing pandemic this is a very busy time for everybody in healthcare. This new, innovative online course from RCPI will give doctors the opportunity to build and reflect on their communication skills in their own time and to work around their busy schedules.”

Dr Terry McWade, CEO of RCPI, said:

Gateway to Communication will be an invaluable resource to doctors who want to grow and hone their communication skills. Our collaboration with the College of Anaesthesiologists of Ireland, the Royal College of Surgeons in Ireland, the Irish College of General Practitioners, the HSE Open Disclosure Programme, and the HSE National Healthcare Communication Programme has been vitally important in the creation and delivery of this comprehensive online course. I would encourage doctors from across healthcare to sign up to attend.”
