Fourth- and fifth-year Specialist Registrars and senior GP trainees who are interested in Quality Improvement are invited to apply to the 2021-22 Quality Improvement Scholarship in Residence Programme.

Developed by the Royal College of Physicians of Ireland and the International Society for Quality in Health Care (ISQua), the scholarship will help you develop as a clinical leader by providing you with expert support and bespoke training over the course of one academic year.

This is a fantastic opportunity to develop your clinical leadership skills and quality improvement knowledge.

The closing date for applications is 25 July 2021.

The Scholars programme aims to change the way future consultants approach health and healthcare by providing an immersion in improvement and patient safety science. With one to one mentoring, group learning and peer to peer coaching you will be preparing yourself to make a difference. You will join a growing network of over 20 scholars, learning and leading together.

What do you get as part of this scholarship?

If you are successful in getting a place on the programme you will be provided with:

  • one to one mentoring including preparing for interviews
  • a course in Improvement science and patient safety
  • coaching on a QI project
  • membership of a learning discussion group
  • special lectures by international and national experts
  • option to complete online courses to meet your learning needs
  • training on how to teach
  • option to join the QI training programme as faculty in the future
  • becoming a member of the network of scholars
  • options to attend international QI conferences*

Benefits of the ISQua partnership include:

  • discount on membership, Fellowship and conference fees
  • option to submit QI case studies and participate on webinars throughout the year

* Some of the courses and conferences may have a cost, others may be free

Time Commitment

The scholarship in residence programme runs over one academic year starting in September 2021.

The time commitment will be 3 days per month. This commitment includes individual mentoring and the specific courses outlined above.

This programme has been a great experience - we have learned to think more broadly and laterally about the science of quality improvement; we have met virtually with internationally renowned leaders in quality improvement who shared their perspectives and experiences with us. It has also been fantastic to meet other like-minded enthusiastic senior NCHDs from different specialties. This network will be a valuable resource for all of us for years to come.

What does the Quality Improvement Scholar in Residence Programme offer?

The RCPI/ISQua Scholarship Programme will provide you with an outstanding opportunity to:

  • Develop your skills and knowledge in the areas of healthcare quality improvement and patient safety, with a special emphasis on teaching and mentorship
  • Develop your leadership and management skills to effectively lead improvement within the healthcare system
  • Develop critical thinking and analytical skills in the field of quality improvement
  • Understand how to spread healthcare quality improvement initiatives within healthcare systems, through national and international organisations
  • Broaden your professional network and develop effective working partnerships in healthcare quality improvement
  • Cultivate an advocacy role for clinical quality improvement amongst postgraduate doctors in training in Ireland
