The Royal College of Physicians of Ireland (RCPI) welcomes the announcement by the Minister for Health Stephen Donnelly to end the policy to give preference to EU doctors seeking specialist training.

RCPI will work with a range of stakeholders, including the Forum for Postgraduate Medical Training Bodies, The Medical Council, the Irish Medical Organisation (IMO) and the HSE NDTP to implement the changes announced by the Minister for Health Stephen Donnelly. Details of the new arrangements are available here.

RCPI believes that equity of access to postgraduate education for all doctors is a fundamental principle, and has supported the fairer allocation of places on training schemes. We are very conscious of the enormous contribution of Non- EU doctors to the health service, in particular, during this pandemic.

We have long been aware of issues regarding access to specialist training for non-EEA qualified doctors and we have met with doctors who advocated for this change.

RCPI has also expanded its educational and training programmes for these doctors. This includes a new Framework of Structured Supports for Non-Training Scheme Doctors in Ireland.
