The Royal College of Physicians of Ireland welcomes new report on trauma system for Irish healthcare system

Doctors on ward

The Royal College of Physicians of Ireland welcomes the Department of Health, A Trauma System for Ireland report from the Department of Health as an important blueprint to deliver patient-centred trauma care.

This report is a step in the right direction. If fully implemented and resourced, it has the capacity to greatly improve trauma care services. I welcome its strong focus on implementation and the establishment of the National Office for Trauma Services and the appointment of a National Clinical Lead.

The report also contains significant proposals to support the short term and long term rehabilitation needs of patients and their families which is particularly welcome. The report is evidence-based and looks at population needs and aims to match the services and the workforce to them. Many of its recommendations echo those of the RCPI Towards 2026 report published in March 2017 which provided a vision for hospital care for the next decade. It also included key components of the Sláintecare report which we hope will be implemented in 2018.
